It is admittedly a bit silly having an ice maker in my fridge when I so infrequently use ice.
Were I to buy a new fridge right now, it would have neither an ice maker nor a water dispenser. Especially because it would be a bottom-freezer model and not a side-by-side.

I've heard that bottom freezer models like to break down. Top freezer models work better because of gravity.
I haven't heard anything like that. Most fridges use a fan and some ducting to blow air from the freezer into the fridge section, regardless of configuration. Other than the old style where the freezer is just a compartment within the fridge that turns into a solid block of ice.
I can't remember where I heard it, but it was when dad's fridge was on the fritz.
