Zap Straps

Have you ever run into someone who calls them "zap straps" and you just sigh and mutter to yourself something along the lines of "why can't you just be normal?"

Anyway, I decided it was high time for me to finally pick up a zip tie tool, specifically the Malco TY4. From FleaBay of course, and here's what it looked like after I cleaned the grime off the tool dip with some rubbing alcohol.

And because I forgot to take a "before" picture, here's a photo from the eBay listing.

Anyway, the way this functions is pretty simple, you feed the zip tie through the tip and a little cam grabs hold of the loose end, tightening the tie as you squeeze the handle.

Then you pull the metal trigger and a blade cuts off the tail right next to the head.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite do a perfect flush cut, but it is nice and square so you're less likely to slice your hand open on the sharp corners.

And no, I had no particular reason to put a zip tie on this tube of caulking. It just happened to be handy for the demonstration.

Like many tools I have picked up recently, this one will make an appearance in a future project, so stay tuned.
